  1.      customary in those histories to ignore the slightly earlier 
  2.      discovery of ways to print pictures and diagrams. A book, 
  3.      so far as it contains a text, is a container of exactly 
  4.      repeatable word symbols arranged in an exactly 
  5.      repeatable order. Men have been using such containers 
  6.      for at least five thousand years. Because of this it can be 
  7.      argued that the printing of books was no more than a 
  8.      way of making very old and familiar things more cheaply. 
  9.      It may even be said that for a while type printing was little 
  10.      more than a way to do with a much smaller number of 
  11.      proof readings. Prior to 1501 few books were printed in 
  12.      editions larger than that handwritten one of a thousand 
  13.      copies to which Pliny the Younger referred in the second 
  14.      century of our era. The printing of pictures, however, 
  15.      unlike the printing of words from movable types, brought 
  16.      a completely new thing into existence‚Äîit made possible
